Passive
Solar Heated Bank
Early
studies had shown that lighting, closely followed by heating,
demanded the most energy for this building. Consequently,
the northern wall of this bank was earth-bermed, providing
protection from the prevailing north winter winds. The southern
side was opened up to emphasize the entrance as well as to
gain the light and heat of the southern exposure. This resulted
in obscuring the bank from the street. This was solved via
a prominent 40 foot high clock tower, which has proved to
be an effective landmark at the entrance to the Town of Herndon,
VA and a symbol for the bank. This bank won a Merit Design
Award from Fairfax County.
