Band Shell by the Stream

This band shell is located in Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts, in a meadow north of the Filene Center, the primary summer performing arts facility in the Park. The form is derived organically and primarily from the acoustic requirements of small outdoor concerts. The front terrace stage steps and decks are designed to allow easy circulation during fund raising parties when performances are not scheduled. The materials, cedar with copper accents, are designed to harmonize with the cedar and copper of the Filene Center, but not to compete with it. This design won a Merit Award from the AIA.
