Sears-Roebuck Transformation

Constructed in 1933 in a small rural Virginia community, this house was originally a catalog house from Sears. In 1987, when escalating land values threatened its existence, concerned neighbors bought the house in hopes of transforming it in a sensitive manner, responsive to the new market for larger homes. Every effort was made not to disturb this gentle cottage or the surrounding trees, to preserve its scale, and respect its spaces and structure. This house captured a Design Award from the AIA and the Fairfax County Exceptional Design Awards Program.
